Beginning in November, approximately 5,000 property owners in Santa Clara County will receive bills from the State Board of Equalization on behalf of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for a fire prevention fee. This fee is levied at a rate of $150 per habitable structure. It is important to stress that neither the Assessor nor the County has any role in levying or administering this fee.
The Assessor’s Office did not provide information that identifies which properties have structures that are habitable or uninhabitable, nor make a determination to that effect. The Assessor was not provided with information as to which properties would be receiving a bill for this fee.
